How the temperature-controlled van refrigeration unit works

Refrigerated vans require a dry goods panel van, installation, some engineering to make the insulation better, a condenser, a compressor and an evaporator.
Materials are installed in the cargo compartment to ensure it is an insulated area. The condenser, compressor and evaporator then work together to regulate the temperature within the cargo cabin, ensuring that the temperature requirements are always met, no matter the product. The insulation provides protection from the external environment.

There are three major processes involved:

  1. Thermal insulation
  2. Thermal engineering
  3. Temperature control

Thermal Insulation

The cargo compartment of our fridge van is insulated and airtight. This insulation means that transporting temperature-sensitive goods is simple. The thermostat is easily adjustable, allowing you to maintain the temperature required.

The insulation materials installed in our fridge vans are of exceptional quality and much thicker than the insulation used in household fridges. Our quality refrigerated vehicles have the extra advantage of getting the very latest, improved insulation materials and refrigeration systems.

To ensure that the refrigeration space remains temperature-controlled, insulation comprised of a dense polymer form is fixed to the cargo compartment of the vehicle. We use insulation that is up to 50 mm thick, because the thicker the insulation, the more effective the cargo compartment is at achieving thermoregulation. Our insulation materials are one of the best in the market.

With our expert sales team dedicated to achieving a hundred percent customer satisfaction rate, we can offer one of the most effective, value for money and precise installation solutions for your vehicle. We have over 20 years’ experience in selling quality vehicles at unbeatable prices.

Thermal Engineering

Thermal engineering converts a regular dry goods panel van into a complete refrigerated vehicle. We have a four-part refrigerated van conversion process.

Styrofoam

We install 50 mm thick Styrofoam into the cargo area. Styrofoam is an expanded polymer made from extruded polystyrene. It is watertight and has a high compression rate. Styrofoam ensures that the cool atmosphere of the van does not escape and the heat from the outside environment is not transferred into the van. This makes the cargo area completely thermoregulated.

Wood Boarding

We install wood panels inside our quality refrigerated vehicles. Wood can easily rot in moisture condensation, so we treat it carefully with fungicide and antibacterial materials to prevent rot. This will ensure that any food or sensitive products travelling in our refrigerated vans will be kept safe.

Fibreglass-like Interior Sheeting

This is effective in maximising the insulation and acts as a keying agent for GRP resin which is next installed.

GRP Resin Interior

Glass reinforced polyester resin is added last. A wet lay roller is used to apply the product to finish the interior part of the refrigerated cargo compartment. It is 100% hygienic and once dried up, you have an easy to clean cargo area.

Through thermal engineering, our fridge vans are constructed in such a way that the refrigeration units (comprising the content condenser, compressor and evaporator) operate with power generated from the engine. This is a structured system, where the power source is the engine and is known as a direct drive mechanism.

Temperature Control

To maintain a temperature-controlled interior, the condenser, compressor and evaporator in the fridge van work together.

The condenser draws in air from the cargo area into its network of pipes. This air heats the coolant fluid in the condenser and turns it into gas. The gas then moves to the compressor where molecules are compressed together under high pressure. The gas then moves to the evaporator which draws in air from the atmosphere outside the vehicle. The air is then pushed into high-pressure gas, which cools and turns back into a liquid. The liquid then finally goes back to the condenser resulting in a perfectly temperature-controlled fan.

A partition wall between the refrigerated cargo area and the driver’s cabin is vital to maintain our temperature-controlled refrigeration system. Glacier Vehicles also create partition walls within the cargo area. This gives the advantage of a dual compartment and enables businesses to transport goods that have different temperature requirements. This wall can be a static partition wall or removable partition wall.

What components are your Refrigerated vans built with?

To ensure that your fridge van provides consistent cooling to low temperatures, our vans are fitted with the TAH refrigeration system. This means that the cargo area is perfectly temperature-controlled should you be transporting frozen foods. TAH is a leading provider of refrigeration units in the UK, known for providing high quality refrigeration systems.

Our new fridge vans have two temp fan kits, which contain an insulated callbox/cargo area divided into dual compartments. This is perfect should you need to deliver small loads of either chilled or frozen products. The expert refrigeration system can maintain a temperature of nought degrees to 5°C with the fan and can heat as well as cool, providing perfect thermoregulation.

When the refrigerated van is driving through environments with different temperatures, the refrigeration system can either cool down to heat up depending on your needs.

refrigerated van cargo options

Our commitment to customer satisfaction and willingness to go the extra mile means that we have a wide variety of cargo options in our temperature-controlled vans for sale.

These include:
Strip curtains. These are PVC curtains which are fixed at the side door and at the back of the refrigerated van. They prevent the loss of cold air and help to promote a temperature-controlled environment.

Standby capacity. With a plug-in standby fifth facility, your van can act as a stationary refrigerator while the engine is turned off.

Slide draws. They are placed at the side of the refrigerated van for specialised products.

Extra shelving or racking. To maximise the load capacity of the fridge van, our friendly staff can install extra shelves or racks.

Wet load or slip resistant floor. Our flooring solution has a terrain that is slip resistant. It also has facilities for draining and collecting excess liquid.

Meat rails. Meat rails ensure that when you are transporting meat within the refrigeration space, your meat products remain intact and hygienic.

Types of Refrigerated vans we offer

Our quality new fridge vans are divided into categories, based on their wheelbase.

Wheelbase is the distance between the centre of the front wheel and the centre of the rear wheel. In vehicles that have over two axles, the wheelbase is the distance between the centre of the front wheel and the midpoint of the other axles. We can offer a diverse range of refrigerated vans for example, you can have a long wheelbase LWB, medium wheelbase MWB or short wheelbase SWP.

Available van models include small refrigerated vans with SWP, medium refrigerated vans with MWB and large refrigerated vans with LWB. The size of the wheelbase will differ, depending on model and manufacturer.

We can offer a comprehensive selection of refrigerated van manufacturers, models and designs. Please contact our expert staff for any advice on new fridge vans with the wheelbase specifications that will meet your requirements.
