What is a new refrigerated van?

A refrigerated van provides the right environment and temperature for the goods you are transporting – be it a dry environment, or a temperature of 0oC.

A refrigerated van has a storage compartment that has been insulated throughout, with an added refrigeration system to lower and maintain temperatures. All of our new Refrigerated vans for sale come with a brand new refrigerated unit.

The refrigerated unit removes heat from the storage compartment and ensures that this compartment is insulated from the ambient temperatures outside of the vehicle.

What are Refrigerated vans used for?

refrigerated vehicles are used in many industries to transport fresh, perishable/temperature-sensitive products.

Refrigerated vans are mainly used to transport the following products:

  1. Food
  2. Medication
  3. Insects like honey bees
  4. Drinks
  5. Scientific materials
  6. Animals like penguins
  7. Flowers
  8. Electronic equipment
  9. Perfumes
  10. Painted artwork, and other kinds of art pieces
  11. Any perishable and temperature sensitive goods

When you purchase your own refrigerated vehicle, delivery is faster and more efficient, which simplifies your logistics. Many businesses in the United Kingdom have used temperature-controlled vans to increase their revenue.

New temperature-controlled vehicles for your transportation and logistics needs

A truck with a powerful engine can keep the refrigeration unit working at the temperature you want while travelling for long journeys.

The mobile refrigeration unit can serve the transportation and logistics needs of your business. It functions both when the vehicle is on the move and when it’s parked since it’s directly powered by the engine when the car is moving and has a standby facility to provide a suitable temperature for your products when the engine has been turned off.

At Glacier Vehicles, we have provided vans for people from a wide range of industries. If you are in the supply chain, cold chain, or distribution industries, consider buying one of Glacier’s new Refrigerated vans today.

Our vehicles deliver results, provide a safe and suitable atmosphere for your products, ensure fuel economy, and give adequate cargo space to suit your business needs at a competitive price.

How a temperature-controlled van refrigeration unit works

A refrigerated van requires a dry goods panel van, insulation, some engineering to make the insulation better, a condenser, a compressor and an evaporator.

Materials are installed in the cargo compartment to ensure it is an insulated area. The condenser, compressor, and evaporator work together to remove any heat in the cargo cabin and ensure it remains at a suitable temperature for the goods.

The insulation provides protection from the external environment.

There are three major processes involved:

  1. Thermal insulation
  2. Thermal engineering
  3. Temperature control

Thermal Insulation

The cargo compartment of our refrigeration vehicle is insulated and airtight. This insulation is vital for the transport of temperature-sensitive goods since it maintains the ambient temperature needed by the product.

The insulation materials installed in our Refrigerated vans are of exceptional quality and are much thicker than the insulation used in household fridges. New Refrigerated vans have the extra advantage of getting the very latest, improved insulation materials and refrigeration systems.

Insulation ensures that heat from the external atmosphere is not transferred into the truck. To achieve this in a refrigerated vehicle, a dense polymer form is affixed to the cargo compartment of the vehicle.

At Glacier Vehicles we use insulation that is up to 50mm thick, because the thicker the insulation, the more effective the compartment is at preventing heat from seeping into the cargo area.

Our insulation materials are one of the best in the market.

With our knowledgeable experts and our experience in providing new refrigerated vehicles for over 20 years, we have the most effective, value-for-money, installation solutions for your vehicle.

Thermal Engineering

Thermal engineering converts a regular dry goods panel van into a complete refrigerated vehicle. We have a four-part refrigerated van conversion process.

We install 50mm thick Styrofoam in the cargo area. Styrofoam is an expanded polymer made from extruded polystyrene. It is watertight and has a high compression rate. Styrofoam ensures that the cool atmosphere of the van does not escape and the heat from the outside environment is not transferred into the van.

Wood Boarding

We install wood panels inside the vehicle.

Wood can easily rot from moisture or condensation, so we treat it with fungicide and antibacterial material to prevent rot. This way, food, and sensitive products are safe.

Fibreglass-like Interior Sheeting

This is effective in maximising the insulation and acts as a keying agent for GRP resin which is installed in the next stage.

GRP Resin Interior

Glass-reinforced polyester resin is added last. A wet lay roller is used to apply the product to finish the interior part of the cargo compartment. It is like resin flooring and is 100% hygienic. Once it dries up, you have an easy-to-clean loading area.

Through thermal engineering, our Refrigerated vans are constructed in such a way that the refrigeration unit (comprising the condenser, compressor, and evaporator) operates with power generated from the engine. This system, where the power source is the engine, is known as a ‘direct drive mechanism’.

Temperature Control

To control the temperature, the condenser, compressor, and evaporator in the refrigerated truck work together.

The condenser draws in air from the cargo area into its network of pipes. This air heats the coolant fluid in the condenser and turns it into gas. The gas moves to the compressor where the molecules are compressed together under high pressure. The gas then moves to the evaporator. The evaporator draws in air from the atmosphere outside the vehicle. This air is pushed into the high-pressure gas, cooling it and turning it back into a liquid. The liquid finally goes back to the condenser, cooling the van.

This process is repeated to attain the desired temperature and maintain it.

To further ensure temperature control is achieved within the refrigeration compartment, a partition wall is created between it and the driver’s cabin.

Glacier Vehicles also creates partition walls within the cargo area. This gives the advantage of a dual compartment and enables businesses to transport goods that have different temperature sensitivities.

The wall can be a static partition wall or a movable partition wall.

What components are your Refrigerated vans built with?

To ensure that your refrigerated vehicles provide consistent cooling to low temperatures, our vans are fitted with the GAH refrigeration system. GAH is a leading provider of refrigeration units in the UK, known for providing high-quality refrigeration systems.

Our new fridge vans have 2-temp fan kits, which contain an insulated cool box/cargo area that is divided into dual compartments. This ensures that you can deliver both chilled and frozen products, transported in different compartments of the same vehicle.

The refrigeration system can maintain a temperature of 0⁰C to +5⁰C within the van and can heat as well as cool, keeping your chosen temperature constant.

When the vehicle is driving through environments with different temperatures, the refrigeration system can either cool down to maintain the temperature you set on the thermostat, or heat up to get to that temperature when necessary.

refrigerated van cargo options

We have a wide variety of cargo options in our temperature-controlled vans for sale. These include:

  1. Strip curtains: PVC curtains are fixed at the side door and at the back of the van, to further maintain the temperature and prevent the loss of cold air.
  2. Standby capacity: With a plug-in standby facility, your van can act as a stationary refrigerator while the engine is turned off.
  3. Slide drawers: They are placed at the side of the van for specialised products.
  4. Extra shelving or racking: To maximise the load capacity of the vehicle, we can install extra shelves or racks.
  5. Wet load or slip-resistant floors: Our flooring solution has a terrain that is slip-resistant. It also has facilities for draining and collecting excess liquid.
  6. Meat rails: Meat rails ensure that your meat products are intact, in one piece, and hygienic.

Types of Refrigerated vans we offer

New Refrigerated vans are divided into categories, based on their wheelbase.

A wheelbase is the distance between the centre of the front wheel and the centre of the rear wheel. In vehicles that have over 2 axles, the wheelbase is the distance between the centre of the front wheel and the midpoint of the other axles.

Depending on the new refrigerated van you’re looking to purchase, you can get a long wheelbase (LWB), medium wheelbase (MWB), or short wheelbase (SWB). Small Refrigerated vans have a SWB, medium Refrigerated vans have a MWB while large refrigerated vans have a LWB. The size of the wheelbase will differ, depending on model and manufacturer.

We have a variety of refrigerated van manufacturers, models, and designs. You can consult us for advice on new Refrigerated vans with the wheelbase specifications that will meet your requirements.
