Light truck

Light truck or light-duty truck is a US classification for trucks or truck-based vehicles with a payload capacity of less than 4,000 pounds. Similar sized goods vehicles in the European Union are known as light commercial vehicles.

Light Trucks for Refrigerated Transport

Light trucks are vehicles used primarily for commercial transport purposes which do not exceed 3.5 tonnes. Light trucks are smaller in size than heavy commercial vehicles, and are generally used for shipping items over short distances. Whereas a heavy commercial truck can be used to haul items over long distances, a light truck is suitable for moving goods from Point A to Point B and back. Businesses that use light trucks for haulage usually have business interests within a short radius. A light truck is, typically, a ruggedly-built compact vehicle that has a low operating cost and high fuel efficiency, and is ideal for intra-city haulage. Vehicles that qualify to be called light trucks include pickup trucks, light vans, three wheelers, and commercial-based passenger vehicles. In the UK, a light truck can be driven by anyone, as long as the person holds a regular driving license, unlike heavy vehicles that require special licenses. Additionally, a light truck is subject to more speed restrictions than a heavy commercial vehicle, as a light truck is required to maintain 60 miles per hour on dual carriageways and 70 miles per hour on a motorway.

What is a Light Truck Used For?

In the UK and elsewhere, light trucks are usually used for commercial purposes. This involves moving goods, and sometimes people, for short distances. Because of the fuel efficiency associated with light trucks, most businesses in the UK have one or more they use in moving their goods from the factory to where it needs to be delivered. A light truck is also ideal for refrigerated purposes. With the right equipment and insulation, a light truck can be used to move perishable items, such as food products, flowers, drugs, and even lab specimens from one place to another. A typical light truck reefer allows for easy temperature control. Some of them have the cooling equipment hooked up to the truck’s engine, and so produce better performance. The right light truck affords you the opportunity to reach areas where a heavy vehicle will not be able to, due to its manoeuvring capabilities and ease of handling.

How to Choose the Right Light Truck for Your Refrigerated Transport Business

Using a refrigerated light truck for moving food items, and other perishable goods, from one place to another makes it possible for your business to expand its customer reach. Of course, it is natural to assume that a regular air conditioned van may serve for delivery. The difference, however, is that with a regular air conditioning, it will be difficult to maintain a uniform temperature throughout the duration of the journey, no matter how short. An insulated, refrigerated light truck, on the other hand, allows for controlled temperature, and takes away the need for frequent stops to check the freshness of your cargo. Light trucks can be found in popular models such as Renault, Mercedes Benz, Citroen, Ford, Peugeot and Toyota, and are usually sold through a dealer, while the refrigerated versions are sold through specialised dealers in the UK.
