Thermal efficiency

In thermodynamics, the thermal efficiency is a dimensionless performance measure of a device that uses thermal energy, such as an internal combustion engine, a steam turbine or a steam engine, a boiler, a furnace, or a refrigerator for example.

Ensuring Thermal Efficiency in Your Refrigerated Vans

Thermal efficiency is one thing you must not ignore in your vans if you want to have a hitch-free and flourishing business. Thermal efficiency is simply the performance or output of an engine, or a system in relation to the input of energy (usually heat energy) supplied to it. Ensuring thermal or energy  efficiency in your van is vital because it concerns both the engine and and the refrigeration system of the van. The performance of your refrigerated vans is, to a significant extent, tied to the overall performance of your business. This is because, on the one hand, how refrigerated the items in the van will be depends on the thermal efficiency of the refrigeration system. And, on the other hand, the speed of the van in  delivering the items is dependent on the thermal efficiency of its combustion engine. Considering these reasons, adequate measures should be taken to ensure that the vans always perform well. To do that, the output of both the engine and the refrigeration system has to be ensured. That will certainly be more difficult in a direct drive system, where the van’s engine not only powers the vehicle, but also the refrigeration system, than where there is a separate power generator for the refrigeration system. Because we are always keen to give our customers competitive edge, at Glacier Vehicles the thermal efficiency of our vans, both the engine and the refrigeration system, is ensured before we send them away. You can, as well, have the thermal efficiency of your fleet checked and ensured by our experts today. Call us on 02086687579.

Factors Affecting the Efficiency of Your Vans

There are many factors that lessen the efficiency of refrigerated van engines, thereby limiting their performance. Some of them include friction, heat (loss both during transmission and during the cooling of the engines), and heat loss owing to lack of total combustion. The efficiency of the engine is also reduced by the energy utilised by oil and water pumps. Also, for direct-drive-mechanism vans,  the presence of the refrigeration system means an extra load on the engine, and this significantly limits its efficiency. Similarly, heat loss in various forms affects the thermal efficiency of the refrigeration system. Moreover, if there is a poor supply of energy, which is needed to generate heat in the system, the thermal efficiency will be affected.

How to Ensure Thermal Efficiency in Refrigerated Vans

Most of the above factors that limit efficiency in vans can hardly be avoided, so long as the vans are in use. However, the chances of them occurring can be reduced by subjecting the vans to regular maintenance and upgrades. The kind of maintenance that will be most helpful in this regard is the preventive type. With preventive maintenance, friction and heat loss of different kinds are reduced to a negligible degree. Would-be future problems are also detected and solved with preventive maintenance, which is why at Glacier Vehicles we always recommend it for our customers. To ensure that the thermal efficiency of your vans never reduces, you can always call on us for quality-assured maintenance and upgrades.
