Categories of Refrigerated Vans
Refrigerated vans are categorised based on their wheelbases. A wheelbase is simply the distance between the midpoint of a vehicle’s front wheels and rear wheels. Where the vehicle has 3 or more axles, the wheelbase is the distance between the front axle, or the midpoint of the front wheels, and the midpoint of the other axles/wheels. Wheelbase length helps you determine the amount of interior space you will get in a van. It is different from the length of the van, which is the distance between the frontmost part of the vehicle and the backmost part. Temperature controlled vehicle have 3 types of wheelbase : Short Wheel Base (SWB): A van with an SWB has a smaller cargo area because of the small space between the axles. It is suitable for driving in the city because it is easier to manoeuvre, especially during traffic. It can more easily navigate narrow streets and has a tighter handling. Medium Wheel Base (MWB): The wheel base is longer than SWB, but shorter than LWB. Long Wheel Base (LWB): Vans with LWB have a larger cargo cabin. They also ride better. Most small refrigerated vans have a short wheel base. With a small fridge van you can easily drive through the city for all your deliveries.
WHAT ARE SMALL FRIDGE VANS USED FOR?
Refrigerated vans are used to transport fresh, perishable products, or temperature-sensitive products and equipment in the appropriate atmosphere. These products include: Food: Perishable food like meat, fruits, vegetables, milk and cold beverages, are transported in a refrigerated van to ensure they don’t decay or perish. Flowers: This ensures that flowers don’t wilt while in transport to various locations. Insects: Some insects need to be transported in a cold temperature. For example, honey bees are transported to farms to pollinate corn and other food. Transporting them in a cool atmosphere prevents heat from damaging the colony. Animals: Birds like penguins are transported with temperature-controlled trucks when they change their nests. Cosmetics: Some cosmetics, like lipstick and other makeup products, need a cool temperature after being manufactured. They’re transported in fridge vans to keep them at an appropriate temperature before they get to the counter. Perfumes: The chemical composition of perfumes is very delicate. Transporting them in a refrigerated van ensures that their chemical composition and fragrance doesn’t change. Medical supplies: Medical supplies and medication are temperature sensitive. Items like flu vaccines, or blood required for a transfusion, need to be kept at the right temperature at all times. Equipment: Appliances such as sound systems are temperature sensitive and need a cool environment when they’re moved from one location to another. Temperature controlled vans are used to transport and deliver varying kinds of products. They have become an asset to ensure goods are fresh and safe always. With the right refrigerated van, you will deliver your products to your customers at their optimal temperature.
HOW DOES THE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM OF SMALL TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED VEHICLES WORK?
A temperature controlled vehicle is basically a dry goods panel van that has been converted into a refrigeration truck. We turn the cargo area of the van into an insulated area before installing a refrigeration unit. Three major processes of a van conversion Thermal Insulation : The cargo compartment of a refrigerated van is insulated and made airtight. This cargo cabin takes the form of a container, and cannot be accessed from the front of the van. Insulation is essential for a successful refrigeration and transportation process because it preserves the cold temperature of the vehicle. Note that a temperature-controlled truck has to constantly be on the road, keeping products at the appropriate cold temperature, while controlling varying thermal influence of external temperature. As a result, it cannot be installed with the insufficient insulation a household fridge might have. Rather, the insulation used for a fridge van is thicker and of greater quality. Thermal insulation is done by applying polymer foam to the entire surface area of the cargo cabin. Thermal Engineering : Thermal engineering is the process whereby the insulation and refrigerating unit are installed. This part of the conversion process is divided into four steps:
- StyrofoamStyrofoam is expanded polymer foam, with a density that is calculated in pounds per cubic foot. It is one of the best insulation materials in the industry. We install 50 mm thick Styrofoam in our refrigerated vehicles. This ensures an increased insulation strength because the thicker the foam, the more efficient the insulation.
- Wood boardingThe second step is to fix boards of wood to the cargo compartment. The wood is treated with a food-safe, antibacterial spray of fungicide to ensure it does not rot.
- Interior sheetingNext, a fibreglass-like interior sheeting is installed. This begins the coating process for the Styrofoam, and acts as a keying agent for the GRP resin that’s added afterwards.
- GRP Resin InteriorTo complete the coating process, GRP resin is applied to the cargo space. Coating adds a protective layer to the Styrofoam and prevents it from getting damaged during loading and unloading.
The GRP resin is applied using a wet lay roller. Unlike dry lay where the coating material is in a solid form, the GRP resin is applied wet so all the tiny spaces in the cargo compartment can be coated and sealed. It dries up on contact, and is 100% hygienic, ensuring a cleanable loading area. This coating protects the cargo area from stains, and is resistant to spillage. Finally, the refrigeration unit is installed. It comprises the condenser, compressor and evaporator, which work together to maintain a cool temperature within the vehicle. The power source of the refrigeration is the engine. Basically, temperature controlled vans use a direct drive mechanism. Temperature Control : The refrigeration system of a temperature-controlled vehicle keeps the cargo area cold by drawing in air into the compressor. It takes it through a few processes that remove heat from the inner atmosphere to make it cooler. A thermostat is added to regulate the temperature of the van, and partition walls are fixed. These help in temperature control, and can be static or movable.

WHAT COMPONENTS ARE CONTAINED IN GLACIER REFRIGERATED VEHICLES?
Glacier small fridge vans have GAH refrigeration systems. GAH refrigeration units are one of the best in the industry. They have 2 Temp Fan Kits and provide a chilled or frozen environment. Depending on the external atmosphere, they heat and cool at the same time to ensure that the exact temperature required for your product remains constant. When the external environment is hotter than the needed temperature for the product in the cargo area, the refrigeration unit cools down. When the external environment is cooler, it heats up to provide the right temperature. Our refrigerated vans have a cooling temperature of 0 to 5 degrees, and can have dual compartments. Due to the expertise of our highly trained staff, we install insulation materials that are durable, lightweight and cost effective. We also provide an efficient, insulated cool box/cargo compartment. Our small fridge vans feature the latest refrigeration technology that gives you excellent performance.
WHAT ARE THE CARGO OPTIONS?
We have several cargo options to ensure your temperature-controlled vehicle suits your business needs. We can install:
- Meat rails, to ensure your meat remains hygienic, safe and fresh.
- Slide drawers, for extra loading of specific products.
- Extra shelves and racking, to make maximum use of your cargo compartment space.
- Wet load or slip resistant floors, to ensure your floor remains dry and hygienic, and for the safety of personnel while loading and unloading the vehicle.
- Standby capacity, to be plugged in when your van’s engine is turned off, to ensure it still acts as a refrigerator when the engine isn’t running.
- Strip curtains to help with maintaining the cool temperature of the cargo area and to avoid loss of the cold atmosphere
