The most interesting and enjoyable thing about this van is its road manners are almost car-like, given the overall size. The engine is smooth and quiet, and precise handling, with a strong turning circle. It’s easy to forget while on the road that this vehicle is not far short of seven metres in length. Changes in gears are sleek and smooth, and matching the power steering to perfection. A combined cycle fuel economy figure of just over 35mpg is very appropriate for a vehicle of this size too.

The van is powered by a 2.2-liter engine with a torque of 155bhp and 284lb / ft, which translates into an abundance of pulling power, even with maximum load on board. Power is transmitted through the rear wheels, and the Transit also sits on rear twin wheels, contributing to this van’s heavy-duty appeal.

Given its size, it only nudges under the magic gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tonnes, which ensures that fleets do not need a tachograph and O-license to use it, but it still provides a decent payload of 1.195 kg.

It’s a major move up to the cargo room-66 cm to be exact-due to the inclusion of a prop shaft underneath, but once in, the Transit looks cavernous. There are 12 load-lashing heads, but all of them are in the field, unlike some of the opposition who have useful extra lugs halfway up. On the positive side, though, the cargo area has no less than five lights, which would be a boon for those making night-time deliveries.
